What Is WiFi Hotspot Activation?

WiFi hotspot activation enables your JLR's built-in mobile data connection to be shared as an in-car wireless network — passengers connect phones, tablets and laptops through the vehicle's roof-mounted antenna rather than their own handset signal.

The vehicle's telematics unit (TCU) already has a data connection for connected services; hotspot activation exposes it to passenger devices. Because the TCU uses an external antenna, in-car WiFi often holds a usable signal where phones drop to one bar — the practical difference on rural motorways is significant. The feature forms part of the connected-services package described across the current Range Rover range.

Compatibility: Models, Years and Trims

Hotspot activation requires the telematics control unit with a data-capable modem — fitted to most connected-services builds from 2017 onward, with SIM arrangements differing by generation:

• Pivi Pro vehicles (2020–present) — Defender L663, Range Rover L460/L461, Discovery 5 facelift, Velar, Evoque L551; embedded SIM with data plan activation — platform notes on hubs such as Range Rover L460
• InControl Touch Pro vehicles (2017–2022) — Range Rover L405, Sport L494, Velar, Discovery 5 and others with Pro Services; physical micro-SIM slot in the vehicle
• Up to eight devices — both generations support multiple simultaneous connections at 4G speeds
• Pre-2017 vehicles — earlier telematics lacks the data hardware; not applicable

One distinction worth understanding: the hotspot shares the vehicle's data connection — it does not create one. If your TCU has no active data service at all, which is common on cars whose original subscription lapsed years ago, activation still enables the hotspot feature but nothing connects until a live data plan exists. Does the hotspot need a separate data subscription? Yes — the vehicle provides the hardware and network; the data itself comes from a plan. Pivi Pro cars use an embedded-SIM plan arranged through the infotainment; Touch Pro-era cars take a data SIM from any compatible carrier.

How many devices can connect at once? Up to eight devices on both infotainment generations, at 4G speeds shared between them. For typical family use — two tablets and a laptop — there is headroom to spare.

Is the in-car signal really better than a phone hotspot? Usually, yes. The TCU uses the vehicle's external roof antenna, which outperforms a handset inside a metal-and-glass cabin, particularly on rural roads. The difference is most noticeable exactly where you want it.

Will activation interfere with the car's connected services? No — the hotspot runs alongside the vehicle's own connected functions (traffic, SOS, remote app). They share the modem but are independent services; enabling one does not affect the others.

My 2018 Range Rover has Pro Services — is the hotspot included? The hardware almost certainly is; whether the hotspot feature is enabled varies by market and original subscription state. A VIN check answers it in minutes, and activation covers the vehicle side if it is disabled.
