What Is Cabin Air Ionisation?

Cabin air ionisation is JLR's air-purification feature: an ioniser in the climate system charges airborne particles so they clump and fall out of the airflow, while a PM2.5 sensor monitors fine-particulate levels inside the cabin.

On equipped vehicles the touchscreen shows a live air-quality readout and the climate system can automatically recirculate when pollution spikes. JLR markets the feature as Cabin Air Purification — on later builds with PM2.5 filtration and CO2 management it materially reduces allergens, dust and city traffic pollution inside the car. The underlying ionisation technology (nanoe) is documented across JLR's current range, including the Range Rover line-up.

Compatibility: Models, Years and Trims

Cabin air ionisation depends on two hardware items — the ioniser module in the HVAC unit and a PM2.5 sensor — so compatibility splits into "activate only" and "fit hardware first" cases:

• Range Rover L460 / Range Rover Sport L461 (2022–present) — see the Range Rover L460 hub; many builds carry the sensor and ioniser wiring from the factory
• Defender L663 (2020–present) — purification with PM2.5 was a factory option; many vehicles are pre-wired
• Discovery 5 facelift, Velar, Evoque L551 — Pivi Pro builds frequently have the sensor fitted but the feature disabled by market
• SDD-era vehicles (pre-2017) — no factory ionisation system exists; not applicable

Two quick checks hint at hardware presence before you send the VIN: a PM2.5 or air-purification entry in the climate settings list, and — on some builds — a visible sensor grille near the dashboard vents. Neither is conclusive, because menu entries are often hidden by configuration entirely, but both are good signs. The ioniser itself mounts inside the HVAC casing and the PM2.5 sensor samples cabin air continuously; on hardware-path jobs both arrive as genuine parts with the correct ducting and connectors for your model year. Every activation ends with a before/after PM2.5 demonstration on the touchscreen, so you can see the system working rather than take it on trust.

How the Retrofit Is Done

Where the hardware is present, cabin air ionisation is a pure software activation completed remotely in 30–45 minutes; where hardware is missing, the physical fit comes first and coding follows:

1. VIN and as-built check — we confirm whether the ioniser and PM2.5 sensor are present on your build.
2. Activation-only path — a technician connects remotely via a compatible DoIP interface, updates the vehicle configuration (CCF) and enables the purification screens in the infotainment.
3. Hardware path — the genuine ioniser module and sensor are fitted (HVAC-side work, typically half a day for a competent trim technician), then coded exactly as in step 2.
4. Verification — the air-quality display appears in the climate menu and live PM2.5 readings respond to a door open/close test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cabin air ionisation just a software unlock on my car? On many Pivi Pro-era builds, yes — the sensor and ioniser are factory-fitted and the feature is simply disabled in configuration. On other builds the hardware is absent and must be fitted first. The VIN check tells you which before any money changes hands.

Does the system actually remove PM2.5, or is it a gimmick? The PM2.5 sensor gives a measurable before/after reading on the touchscreen, so you can verify the effect yourself. Ionisation plus fine filtration measurably reduces particulate counts in independent cabin-air tests.

Will this work on my 2016 Range Rover? No. The factory ionisation system does not exist on SDD-era vehicles. The feature arrived with the current electronic architecture; pre-2017 cars have no hardware provision for it.

Does the ioniser need maintenance or replacement? The ioniser module itself is largely maintenance-free; the cabin filter should be replaced on schedule, as filtration performance depends on it. There are no subscriptions or consumables beyond normal servicing.

Can the activation be reversed? Yes. Activation is a configuration change, not a permanent flash — the vehicle can be returned to its as-built configuration at any time.
