What Is the Activity Key Gen2?

The Activity Key Gen2 is JLR's second-generation wearable key: a waterproof, battery-free wristband that locks, unlocks and authorises your vehicle, so you can leave the smart key safely inside while you surf, ride or train.

The original Activity Key launched with the Discovery in 2017; the Gen2 wristband is slimmer, lighter and works across the current JLR line-up. It communicates with the vehicle over the same secure radio system as a smart key — hold it against the tailgate or door sensor point, the car locks and disables the key inside, and the wristband becomes your only way back in until you unlock again.

Because the wristband carries no battery, it works when wet, sandy, frozen or dropped — exactly the conditions where a £400 smart key does not belong. JLR lists the accessory in the official Defender range literature, but supply and pairing support vary widely by market — which is where this service comes in.

Compatibility: Models, Years and Trims

Activity Key Gen2 is supported on most DoIP-era JLR vehicles — the pairing routine is an online security operation, so the car must be a Pathfinder/TOPIx Cloud vehicle, not an SDD-era model:

How the Pairing Is Done

Pairing an Activity Key Gen2 is a security-gated online procedure: the wristband must be introduced to the vehicle's security modules through a live TOPIx Cloud session — it cannot be paired with offline tools:

1. Order the genuine wristband — we ship the sealed Activity Key Gen2 worldwide with instructions.
2. Book a pairing session — you connect a compatible DoIP interface and an internet-connected laptop to the vehicle.
3. Remote security session — our technician authenticates through TOPIx Cloud and runs the Activity Key pairing routine in Pathfinder. You will need your existing smart key present during pairing.
4. Test together — lock the smart key inside, unlock with the wristband, and confirm the vehicle starts with only the wristband present.

A typical session takes 30–45 minutes. The same workflow we use for all remote coding sessions applies — you never ship the car anywhere, and the wristband stays paired until it is explicitly deleted.

Two situations we see weekly: owners who bought a wristband second-hand and cannot pair it — used units pair fine once they have been deleted from the donor vehicle, but they still need the same online security session — and owners whose market never offered the accessory at all, which is a supply issue only since the hardware itself is universal. Note also that the Gen1 and Gen2 bands are not interchangeable: the Gen2 pairs over the newer security architecture, which is exactly why only DoIP-era vehicles qualify. If you already own a wristband, simply book the pairing session alone and have both smart keys and the wristband on hand when we connect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Activity Key Gen2 need charging or batteries? No. The wristband is a passive RFID-style device with no battery and no charging. It is waterproof and shockproof, which is precisely the point of carrying it instead of a smart key.

Can I pair an Activity Key myself at home? Not with consumer tools. Pairing is a security operation that requires an authenticated TOPIx Cloud session through Pathfinder. Our remote service handles this with your interface and laptop on the vehicle.

Will my existing smart keys still work after pairing? Yes. Pairing adds the wristband as an additional credential; your existing smart keys continue to work normally. The key-inside-lockout behaviour only applies while the car is locked with the wristband.

What happens if I lose the wristband? Any smart key still unlocks and starts the car as normal, and the lost wristband can be deleted from the vehicle's security memory in a short follow-up session so it can never be used again.

Is the Activity Key Gen2 compatible with the older Gen1 system? No — the two generations use different hardware and pairing routines. Gen2 vehicles need the Gen2 wristband; check your model year against the compatibility list above or send us your VIN.
