What a DTC Actually Tells You

A diagnostic trouble code is a standardised message a control module stores when it detects a fault — see the OBD-II trouble code reference for the underlying standard. The first letter names the system: P codes cover the powertrain (engine, gearbox, emissions), B codes the body (airbags, seats, locks, climate), C codes the chassis (ABS, suspension, steering) and U codes the network (module communication). The digits that follow identify the specific circuit or failure mode, and the two-character suffix (e.g. -00, -23) pinpoints the exact fault type — "signal stuck", "circuit open", "implausible signal" and so on.

Reading JLR Codes Correctly

JLR vehicles use the standard OBD-II code structure, but the workshop-level meaning is model-specific — the same code can have different guided diagnostics on a Defender than on an XF. Is the DTC database the same one dealers use? The records are compiled from JLR workshop documentation — the same source material dealer systems present — covering 2,200+ codes across the P, B, C and U families. Guided pin-point tests and live-data steps still require SDD, Pathfinder or TOPIx Cloud on the vehicle.

Why does my code show several -xx variants? The two-character suffix identifies the fault subtype — for example a circuit that is open, shorted, or reporting an implausible signal. Searching the base code (P0010) lists every documented variant so you can match the exact one your scanner reported.

Can I clear a fault code with this tool? No — this is a reference lookup, not a scanner. Clearing codes requires a diagnostic interface connected to the vehicle, and the code will return if the underlying fault is not fixed. Start with the recommended actions in each result.

The lookup found nothing for my code — now what? Try the base code without the suffix, or a keyword describing the symptom.
