Configurable Stop-Start — Set Your Default Once

Tired of pressing the stop-start button after every start? We recode the default state so your preference persists — reversible, dealer-safe and completed remotely in about 30 minutes.

What Is Configurable Stop-Start Disable?

Configurable stop-start disable is a configuration change that makes the auto stop-start system remember your choice — off by default from every ignition cycle, instead of re-arming itself each time you start the car.

The system itself remains intact: the dashboard button still toggles stop-start on demand, the battery and charging logic are untouched, and no fault codes are generated. What changes is only the default state at key-on. It is the single most requested convenience code across the JLR range — including on vehicles whose official documentation, such as the Range Rover owner's material, describes the button but never a memory function.

Compatibility: Models, Years and Trims

Any JLR vehicle with automatic stop-start can be coded — the method differs by diagnostic era and model year, but the end result is identical across the entire range:

  • DoIP vehicles (2017–present) — Defender L663, Range Rover L405/L460, Sport L494/L461, Velar, Discovery 5, Evoque L551 and others, coded through Pathfinder/TOPIx Cloud; model-specific notes live on the vehicle hubs such as Range Rover L460
  • SDD vehicles (pre-2017) — earlier Range Rover, Discovery and Jaguar models, coded via SDD CCF editing
  • All trims and engines — petrol, diesel, MHEV and PHEV; the stop-start logic lives in the same configuration structure regardless of powertrain

Market does not matter for the coding itself, though emissions-certified default behaviour varies by region — the change restores user control, it does not remove any hardware.

How the Coding Is Done

Stop-start default coding is one of the quickest jobs we do: a remote session of around 20–30 minutes updates the configuration, and the new default survives every restart from that moment on:

  1. Book a session — order online and choose a slot.
  2. Connect — a compatible interface to the vehicle, a laptop to the internet; hire kits available if you own neither.
  3. Remote coding — our technician updates the vehicle configuration (CCF) and sets your chosen default: off-by-default with on-demand use, or restored memory of your last setting.
  4. Verify together — two ignition cycles to confirm the behaviour holds, then the session closes.

Because this is a configuration edit rather than a flash, it carries none of the risks associated with ECU tuning — the process is the same one dealers use to change market settings, documented in our remote coding service overview.

Why do so many owners ask for this one change? Because the factory default re-arms stop-start at every key-on, a driver who prefers it off must press the button on every single journey — thousands of presses across an ownership period. Stop-start itself is genuinely useful in dense urban traffic, which is exactly why we code a default rather than delete the feature: the dashboard button still works the moment you want the system back. Most customers tell us the recode changes nothing about how the car drives — it simply removes a daily irritation that the factory configuration imposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is disabling stop-start legal? The feature remains fully functional — only its default state changes, and the driver can re-enable it with the dashboard button at any time. No emissions hardware is removed or defeated. Regulations concern fitted systems, not which default a configuration starts in.

Will this affect my battery or charging system? No. The battery monitoring and charging strategies are untouched. With stop-start off by default the system simply performs fewer stop cycles — if anything, starter and battery wear decreases.

Can the dealer see or reverse the change? The change is visible in the configuration as a non-standard market setting, and a dealer restoring as-built configuration would reset it. If that happens, we simply repeat the coding — repeat sessions for resets are charged at a reduced rate.

Does this work on my mild-hybrid (MHEV) model? Yes. MHEV stop-start logic is configured the same way as conventional systems. PHEV models behave slightly differently in electric-only operation, but the same coding applies.

Can I have memory-of-last-setting instead of always-off? Yes — both behaviours are configurable. Tell the technician your preference at the start of the session and the configuration is set accordingly.

Pricing and How to Order

Stop-start coding is a flat-fee remote session — one connection, one configuration change, and a verification restart — with no parts and no follow-up visits required:

  • Remote coding session — 20–30 minutes, including verification across two ignition cycles
  • Combination sessions — pair it with other convenience codes (video in motion, global window close) in the same connection at reduced cost
