Retrofit · Land Rover Defender L663
Adaptive Cruise Control for the Defender
Stop-and-go adaptive cruise on the L663 — radar hardware where your build needs it, then remote activation with a live road verification.
What the Adaptive Cruise Retrofit Adds
A Defender adaptive cruise control retrofit upgrades the L663 from standard cruise to radar-guided ACC with Stop & Go — the system holds your set speed, matches the vehicle ahead automatically, and can bring the Defender to a complete stop and pull away again in queueing traffic. On a vehicle that covers serious motorway mileage, it is the single most transformative assistance upgrade available for the platform.
Two situations exist in practice, and which one applies to your Defender decides the whole shape of the job:
- Radar already fitted — many L663 builds carry the front radar and camera hardware even when ACC was not ordered; here the retrofit is a software activation plus a steering-wheel switch pack, completed remotely
- Radar not fitted — earlier or base-spec cars need the radar module, bracket and wiring added physically before any coding can take place
Either way, the finished system behaves exactly like the factory option: same driver display graphics, same steering-wheel controls, same integration with the collision-avoidance functions.
Compatibility: Models, Years and Requirements
The retrofit covers Defender L663 models from 2020 onwards — 90, 110 and 130, diesel, petrol and PHEV. What varies by build is how much hardware is already present, which is why every enquiry starts with a VIN decode.
| Starting point | Hardware needed | Coding needed |
|---|---|---|
| ACC-prep build (radar + camera fitted) | Switch pack only (if not present) | CCF activation + calibration |
| Radar absent | Radar module, bracket, harness, switch pack | CCF activation + calibration |
| Camera-only driver assistance | Radar + bracket + switch pack | CCF activation + calibration |
- Model years: 2020–present, all bodies and powertrains
- Diagnostics: DoIP platform — Pathfinder for calibration, TOPIx Cloud for online configuration; no SDD path exists on the L663
- Prerequisites: functioning forward camera and steering assistance modules (a pre-scan confirms both before work begins)
Factory driver-assistance specifications are published on the official Land Rover Defender site, and the platform-wide diagnostic background is on our Defender L663 vehicle hub.
How the Retrofit Is Carried Out
Hardware first, software second — the radar and switch pack go in physically, then the vehicle's configuration is updated and the radar calibrated before the system is allowed to operate. Split by phase:
Physical installation (where required):
- Front grille and lower trim removed to access the radar mounting point
- Radar module fitted to its bracket with the correct harness connection
- Steering-wheel switch pack replaced with the ACC variant
- A competent workshop or careful DIY owner completes this in roughly two to three hours; no structural work is involved
Software activation (remote session):
- Connect a DoIP interface and laptop — the SX-Tool JLR interface, DA-DoIP, genuine VCI or our hire kit — with battery support attached
- Our technician updates the CCF to the ACC-equipped configuration via TOPIx Cloud-level access
- Radar calibration is run through Pathfinder's guided routine — this step is mandatory; an uncalibrated radar will either refuse to engage or track incorrectly
- Full fault scan and a road-test checklist completed with you before sign-off
The software half typically takes 45–60 minutes once connected. Hardware installation time depends on the starting specification as tabled above.
Pricing, Parts and Ordering
Costs split into hardware (where needed) and a fixed-fee activation. As a planning guide: software-only activations on ACC-prep cars are a modest fixed fee; full hardware retrofits add the radar, bracket, harness and switch pack, with genuine used radar units offering meaningful savings over new. Main-dealer pricing for equivalent ACC upgrades commonly runs well into four figures fitted, so a source-and-code approach is substantially cheaper.
- Activation service — adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go activation covers the CCF coding and guided calibration remotely
- Hardware — radar, bracket and switch pack are quoted by VIN, as part numbers vary by build year and market
- Bundling — ACC activation pairs naturally with traffic sign recognition and other assistance features in a single session
Send your VIN with the order and we confirm the exact hardware list and total before anything ships.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Defender L663 have adaptive cruise retrofitted? The vast majority can. The determining factors are whether the front radar is already present and whether the forward camera is the driver-assistance variant — both are confirmed from the VIN before you commit. Cars without the radar simply need the hardware added first.
Is the retrofitted system identical to the factory option? Functionally yes. The same radar, the same software functions and the same driver display integration are used; the only difference is the order in which the parts reached the car. Calibration is performed to the same factory specification via Pathfinder's guided routine.
Can the coding be done remotely if I fit the hardware myself? Yes — this is the most common arrangement. You or your local workshop fit the radar and switch pack, then we complete the CCF activation and radar calibration in a live remote session of roughly an hour.
Does ACC work with the P400e plug-in hybrid? Yes — the system is powertrain-agnostic on the L663 and integrates with the hybrid's braking and drive systems exactly as it does on the petrol and diesel variants. Stop & Go behaviour is the same across the range.
What happens if the radar is fitted but not calibrated? The system will not operate correctly — at best it refuses to engage with a fault message; at worst it tracks inaccurately. Calibration is a mandatory part of the retrofit and is always included in our activation session.
